In a time where straightening and curling hair every day is the norm, split ends and dead hair have become a major problem for girls everywhere. But you shouldn’t have to stop your routine to achieve healthy and soft hair. It all depends on the type of products you use and how you treat your hair before adding heat.

The first step to luxurious hair is not washing it as often. As crazy as it sounds, washing your hair every day is actually extremely bad for it. Shampoos and conditioners strip the hair of natural oils that are necessary for shiny and healthy hair. Instead of washing your hair every day, try washing it every other day. If you struggle with greasy hair, try using a dry shampoo. I recommend Amika Perk Up dry shampoo from Sephora ($22.00) or Tresemme Fresh Start from any local drugstore ($15.00). This is a guaranteed method of getting rid of that dry, crispy feeling hair can get after too much heat is applied to it.

Stephanie Velasquez, a senior who tried the new washing routine, admitted her hair looked better afterwards. “My hair definitely looked shinier after a week of not washing my hair every day.”

Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner is also vital for healthy locks. My personal favorite at the moment is the anti-breakage keratin oil shampoo and conditioner by OGX. The products are designed to “reinforce each strand [by] increasing elasticity to resist breakage caused by brushing and styling.” After using them, I noticed my hair was less oily, softer, and much more manageable than it was before. At $5.99 for a medium sized bottle that lasts for over a month, it is a bargain. Both the shampoo and conditioner are available at Target along with many other options for different types of hair.

To achieve healthy and strong strands, it is never enough just to use shampoo and conditioner. Try finding an additional oil such as coconut, Moroccan argan, or kukui to apply to the hair after showering. Remember to only apply it to the ends or built up grease will become prominent in the scalp making for a dirty look. This oil works to repair the hair of damage, make it feel softer, and give it some extra shine. I recommend Nourishing Coconut Milk by OGX ($5.49) for straight to semi wavy hair or Moroccanoil Treatment by Moroccanoil ($15.00) for all hair types.

For color treated hair, it is necessary to deep condition after dying. The number one mistake people make after dying hair is using their everyday shampoo and conditioner. After your hair has been treated with harsh chemicals you can’t just treat it like it’s a regular day. I recommend skipping your regular products and using a conditioner specifically made for after coloring. My favorite would be Feria Power Shimmer Conditioner by L’Oreal ($22.99 for pack for five). Use this conditioner the day of your coloring to bring the hair back to life, then continue to use it every two weeks as part of your regular routine to ensure shine and to keep your color vibrant.

To get healthy and great looking hair, you don’t need to cut out using heat, stop dying your hair, or chop it all off. It’s possible to have an amazing mane with just a little bit of extra tender, love, and care.
