Attending college is made more accessible with the help of scholarships such as the GATES Millennium Scholarship, which is available for undergraduate students from August 1st to January 1st, 2016 with only a few requirements.

The applicants must meet the basic requirements along with having dedication and determination. The minimum GPA is 3.3, and the student must be a part of the ethnicities:  African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American. Also, they must be legal US Citizens or residents. Last, but not least applicants must have demonstrated leadership skills through volunteering and high school activities.

As applicant Emily Ontiveros pointed out, “It has been a stressful procedure; however, I strongly believe I will obtain it since three students from each school are selected every year.” Part of the process includes submitting an elaborate application. Also, applicants must write nine essays, each individual one with a specific prompt regarding personal struggles etc, and obtain two letters of recommendation from reliable sources.

Although the process of applying is composed of a series of steps, the reward is a full ride to any school in the field of any math, engineering, or science major. Along with the scholarship requirements, the student must commit to attending a full-time, four-year University and maintaining a high GPA or else their scholarship may be revoked.

However, in order to be a candidate, it is also mandatory to meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. But, just because one applied for the scholarship does not mean they don’t have to apply for FAFSA, as they are still required to do so in January through March.

In addition the student applying has to submit all three required forms according to the official website, “… the student’s application (Nominee Personal Information Form), an evaluation of the student’s academic record (Nominator Form) and an evaluation of the student’s community service and leadership activities (Recommender Form) by the deadline.”

Anyone interested in applying must consider all these requirements along with any additional information required by the program. For more information, it is recommended to visit the Gates Millennium Scholars Program 2016 website.
