Causing major concern about the role they play in climate change, nearly 1,000 employees will walkout on September 20 to protest climate change. Amazon is a huge multi billion dollar company that employs thousands of people and is looking to add 30,000 more jobs soon. However, with being such a large company, there is bound to be some waste.
The group that is planning this walkout over climate are called Amazon Employees for Climate Justice. This group of activists within Amazon state that they are planning this upcoming walkout because they want Amazon to become a company with zero emissions. In a statement given to CNN the Amazon Employees for Climate Change explained,”…in the face of the climate crisis, a true leader is one who reaches zero emissions first, not one who slides in at the last possible moment,” further pushing the urgency of their situation.
The group’s official goal is for Amazon so be a zero emissions company by 2030. Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos has made many innovative changes to the company that have made the company play a smaller role in the climate change crisis. However, even with Jeff Bezos having some positive impacts on the company, the Amazon Employees for Climate Justice are adamant that more progressive changes can be made to the company. With climate change being a very hot topic in politics right now, organizers of the walkout believe that now is the perfect time for making their stand.
Expanding on what they believe to be their duty organizers of the walkout also added on a post on a publishing platform named Medium, “ As employees at one of the largest and most powerful companies in the world, our role in facing the climate crisis is to ensure our company is leading on climate, not following.” Being such a large company, Amazon can act as a role model for other companies on how to structure their company and limit their carbon footprint.
If the voices of those participating in the walk out are heard, Amazon may eventually become one of the first multi billion dollar company with zero emissions. The nearly 1,000 Amazon employees in the walkout will try to have a lasting impact that will be seen by the leaders of the company.
